The Freedom of Creativity | The Four Types of Freedom

The Freedom of Creativity is the freedom to use your energies however you choose.

Having the Freedom of Creativity means that you are not limited to only producing the work you are assigned but that you can follow your curiosities and self-direct where to put your efforts on any given day.

There’s a common misconception that the Freedom of Creativity is only for right-brained creatives but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Most anyone who has aspired for promotions or leadership positions so that they can do their work however they think is best or so that they can direct the momentum of a company or project has been led by the drive for creative freedom.

The Freedom of Creativity is ideal for people who:

  • have specific ideas of how they want to accomplish their projects

  • don’t follow others’ direction easily

  • have the ability to knock a whole lotta things off their to-do lists when they are self-motivated to do them

  • have been told their entire lives that they are “bossy” or “natural leaders” (we need to stop using the word “bossy” - it’s got negative connations and is primarily directed at women and girls. If you think a woman or girl is “bossy” consider that she has leadership skills, instead.)

If you would like more creative freedom in your life, there are countless ways to incorporate it.

Vocationally, one of the biggest changes to make is to start your own business or freelancing work. Take the thing you are the most passionate about - that’s also scalable - and find a way to make it a bigger part of your income.

If leaving your current job isn’t in the plan, are there ways you can gain more responsibility and autonomy at work? Can you start a new project or team in which you are the primary director?

Outside of work, you can find hobbies* or community groups and programs that allow you free expression of your talents, skills, and interests. You may find a lot of fulfillment in leading the local theater group or organizing community events. Perhaps you enjoy creative outlets that are more solo in practice and result - knitting yourself a sweater based on a design you made up or altered or developing the World’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe, for example.

Those who pursue the Freedom of Creativity are very motivated by leaving their mark on the world and bringing to life the things they see in their mind’s eye - whether that be a mural, a computer program, a menu, a book, a scientific discovery, or a lifestyle.

If you’re motivated by the Freedom of Creativity, what is it that YOU want to bring to the world?

*hobbies, not necessarily “jobbies” - not everything has to be monetized.
